John is the
founder and director of Byron Yoga (formerly The Epicentre Yoga Rooms)
at Belongil Beach in Byron Bay. As the longest running yoga studio in
the region, it has attracted students and apprentice teachers from all
over the world for the past 18 years. Born in Melbourne, John has been practicing yoga for twenty-five years. He has studied both the Iyengar and Ashtanga traditions as well as the softer Shivananda and Satyananda styles. His approach is also influenced by the energy principles of Aikido. His classes incorporate elements of the various classical schools in a particularly joyous and light-hearted form. John says “If you’re not enjoying your yoga practice, something needs to change. Yoga ought to be joyfully performed.” In addition to his ease in working with students of all levels, John’s particular specialty is assisting those recovering from addictions through yoga. He’s the Treasurer of The Buttery, a residential drug and alcohol treatment community in northern NSW. John organizes an annual 2-day Yogathon with all proceeds going to The Buttery, as well as voluntarily teaching yoga to the residents. A former ashram resident, John now lives with his wife Michelle and their 7-year old daughter Shaani on 48 acres of regenerating rainforest behind Byron Bay. In addition to running the Byron Yoga studio, and training teachers through an apprentice system, he conducts yoga retreats overseas and throughout Australia. THE RETREAT During the retreat, participants
will live a total "yoga life-style", practicing yoga, meditation,
and pranayama and eating raw foods in a beautiful, natural environment.
The retreat will be equally beneficial to experienced beginners (with
a minimum of 6 months of regular yoga practice) through to advanced
students, those seeking "time-out" from their regular routine,
and those seeking relief from pain, postural limitations, toxicity and
stress. (If you are in doubt if this suits you, please contact Alison)
All students, whatever their
motivation for joining the retreat, will appreciate this precious opportunity
to withdraw from the outer world and journey within. Setting a firm
foundation of fastidiously correct alignment in the Asanas, we will
sharpen our focus of the here and now. From this point of mental clarity,
we will begin to understand the relationships between the physical body,
the breath, and the workings of the mind. We will develop the ability
to change our state of mind and energy level by working with Pranayama
(yogic breathing techniques), Meditation, and the Bandhas (internal
locks).
